I saw three movies over the past month and didn’t write about them. Until now!
John Wick Chapter 2 (Feb 12)
I loved it but didn’t think it was as great as the first one. Much like The Raid: Redemption the first John Wick was SO simple there was no real story to get in it’s way. John Wick Chapter 2 has much more story but it’s more the form of world building in that strange assassin’s world that is just off a bit from standard reality. The big downfall is John is kinda stupid in this one. I mean he wasn’t portrayed as a genius before but without giving things away his “simple” out was to kill the guy he killed at the end in the beginning. Don’t get me wrong — still wonderful. After seeing it my sister asked “did they kill his cat this time?” and I told her it was his house. They killed his house. If you’ve seen it you can tell if I’m joking or not.
The Girl With All The Gifts (Feb 26)
We read the book by M.R. Carey (a.k.a. comic author Mike Carey) for book club around last Thanksgiving. While I had know about the movie, someone also discovered it but was confused by the race changes. In the book Mrs. Justineau (Gemma Arterton) is clearly black and Melanie (Sennia Nanua) is clearly white. I didn’t have an issue with it before or after the film but it took a viewing for some people to let the acting inform their choices. Both book and movie are an interesting take on zombies and worth seeing.
Logan (Mar 4)
There was a great Deadpool short at the beginning.
So I’ve read the source material which is more Death of Wolverine but still has elements of Old Man Logan but really neither. The thing that makes this for me is Laura (Dafne Keen) as X-23. The first big action scene where she goes all X-23 was something that I was unaware I needed. It’s a strong film, perhaps a bit too long, but well worth it. It earns a genuine R rating not just for violence but killing, and killing and a very graphic way.
